Hey Friends!


I first heard about the Soultanicals line from the 30 Day Hair Detox. After reading the ingredients I was really curious to see how they would work on my hair. The product line is made with all natural botanicals. I’m trying to stay as close to natural as possible with my beauty products and this entire line fits that requirement. Soultanicals stands out because of the creative play on words they used when naming their products. I was also pleasantly surprised to find them at my local beauty supply store. Right next to Trader Joe’s J


I picked up 3 products from the Soultanicals line


It was time for a wash and I used my regular shampoo to cleanse my hair. You can find a list of the products I’m currently using here. When it was time to deep condition my hair I used their Afrotastic Curl Elastic Deep Conditioning Treat. Aside from the super long title it was easy to apply. I applied the conditioner in sections as I normally do with any other product. My hair was in dire need of a clarifying which I did not do. I’m interested to try this again once I’ve fully clarified my hair to see if it yields better results.

After swooshing the product in sections I donned a plastic cap and sat under my hooded dryer for 15 minutes. My hair felt soft afterwards and it was easy to rinse out and detangle. Since I have fine low porosity hair it didn’t penetrate my strands as well as I’d like to. I felt my hair could have absorbed the conditioner more. I’ll report back with an updated review after clarifying.


Once the conditioner was thoroughly rinsed I proceeded to apply the Knot Sauce as my leave in conditioner. Very rarely will I style my hair wet so I stretched my hair using curl formers. I found that the Soultanicals Knot Sauce was thick. I loved the ingredients nothing that I didn’t understand or couldn’t pronounce. I usually prefer my leave in to be a bit more watery in consistency so next time I may squeeze this into an applicator bottle with a little water to create the texture that I like. All in all after my curl former set was dry the product left my hair soft to the touch and had a nice sheen minus a greasy feeling.

Usually after stretching my hair I either rod set, twist, or braid out on my hair. This time I opted for a twist out. I think I found a new method for twisting my hair which is actually yielding pretty awesome results. I think I’ll try it a few more times to perfect it just to be sure. To twist my hair I used the Fluff-a-licious Curl Nutricious. As I massaged the products from route to tip per section and twisted it felt a little sticky so initially I was worried that my hair would dry with a film on it. Even after twisting my entire head my hand felt a little sticky to the touch. Thankfully after my twist fully dry and I unraveled them my hair felt super soft and moisturized. It had a nice body and shine. Plus this product has a soft hold so I was able to keep my twists in for a couple days before retwisting.

All in all I liked this line. I’ve heard some good things about their shampoos and cleansers so I would like to try those next. If I had to only repurchase one product I would say the Fluff-a-licious because it was a great soft hold product for set styles. I mostly wear my hair in twists, braid outs, or rod sets so this definitely fits my styling preference.

Why Women of Color Should Opt for Non-Toxic Cosmetics

When I refer to women of color I don’t just mean those of Black or African decent. The term includes women from a wide variety of backgrounds including Latina, Native American, Asian, and Indian. As a fellow brown girl my passion and drive for creating this blog is to serve as a resource and motivation to chose organic and all natural options when it comes to cosmetics. My goal with this blog is to at least get women to consider their health when purchasing beauty products and to show that there are safer alternatives.


Cosmetics are a $71 billion industry. Of that number women of color spend close to three times as much than any other group. Cosmetic products marketed to women of color have improved in providing safer ingredients. The natural hair care industry has grown from only a select few companies to several; most of which are now offered in local beauty supply stores and big box retailers. I remember a time when there were only a select few available exclusively online.


According to the Environmental Working Group many ingredients used in traditional personal care products are known carcinogens, which have been linked to breast cancer. Unfortunately in the United States there is no system in place to regulate potentially toxic ingredients in cosmetics. Cosmetic companies are not required to have their products tested for safety by the FDA or any other agency. This means we as consumers have to be careful to read our labels and understand the ingredients in the products we use in and on our bodies daily.


The average US woman uses beauty products that contain nearly 200 different chemicals. Of these chemicals many include parabens, mercury, artificial dye, phthalates, formaldehyde, and toluene. All of these substances have been proven to cause many adverse health risks with prolonged use. Some of these health concerns are fibroid tumors, infertility, birth defects, hair loss, cancer, and this is just to name a few! Women of color are at a greater risk for these fibroids, breast cancer, and other diseases.


I often hear women of color especially in the black community stay away from certain ingredients in their hair care products but why not extend that to your makeup, skincare, and other beauty products. While it may sound overwhelming at first you can make small changes one product at a time. As a woman of color I understand where the challenge comes to finding cosmetics that are a perfect match. Hopefully this blog will introduce you to some natural alternatives that won’t compromise your health in the name of beauty.

How to Go Green with your Beauty Routine

If you’re new to the green beauty community and not sure where to start then this post is for you. Here are a few tips that I’ve learned along the way in transforming my beauty routine to toxic free.

First things first…….Don’t throw everything out going on a rampage tossing everything in sight!


You don’t have to go cold turkey. If you’re new to the all-natural game take baby steps. When I first started I was so excited and ready to just throw all my toxic beauty products in the trash. Wean yourself off chemical dependency slowly. For example if your normal facial has not so safe ingredients only use it once a day instead of twice. On the alternate days try using a natural alternative instead.


Replace products as you run out– One at a time with healthier choices each time. Go for the biggest impact. Body wash , lotion, shampoo, and hair products are the easiest to swap out. If you are a woman with natural hair then you probably already use natural hair products. Although some toxic ingredients are starting to show up in those too as manufactures are getting smarter about using the word “natural” on labels. So be cautious and read the ingredient list before you buy.


Learn to read labels. Know your ingredients. If you’re not sure what something means do your research to understand before you apply it to your skin. There are tons of resources like this blog for instance J Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and EWG Skin Deep are also good resources for information. I like using the Thinkdirty app, which allows you to scan the barcode of products while you are in the store. It scans for toxic chemicals and ingredients in beauty products then rates their safety so you can know before you buy. You can find this in the Apple App store or Google Play.


Makeup will probably be the hardest and take the longest to replace honestly. Especially if you are a makeup girl whose put in time and money to build up your makeup stash. With makeup start replacing your foundations first. Ask for samples or try smaller sizes. Especially us brown girls who have a hard enough time already finding our perfect shade. Nowadays many companies have a 30 day return policy so even if you buy a full size and it doesn’t work for you, you can get your money back.


Sign up for some organic beauty subscription boxes. Here are a few that I personally have tried.

Sometimes you even get full size products to try. The great thing about subscription boxes is they allow you test out multiple products at a fraction of the cost to purchase them individually.


Important points to remember: It can be scary and overwhelming especially when you start learning about the dangers in many beauty products. Remember why you are doing this in the first place. Don’t sacrifice your health for beauty. Yes you can still be glamorous and healthy at the same time.

My Natural Hair Routine and Products

I’ve received a few questions on social media about what specific products I use on my natural hair. I shared my simple routine in my post about the Hair Detox which you can read here.

I still plan on keeping it simple and not using a tone of products on my hair. I feel that less is more and it doesn’t take much to keep my hair healthy and moisturized.

I typically wash my hair once a week or every 5-7 days depending on how it looks/feels. Once I style my hair I try not to restyle or re-twist throughout the week. I found that too much manipulation was causing breakage.

I sleep with a satin bonnet and fluff my hair in the morning and go. No moisturizing during the week as I take care of that during my washday. By washing, properly cleansing, and rehydrating my hair my conditioning I found that keeps my hair moisturized the rest of the week.

Of course these are the list of products I am currently using. I am experimenting with different products and natural brands. I will be reviewing a few new brands on the blog soon so be sure to check back for those updates. I will be sure to update my routine and products as they change.

Flexi Rods on Dry Natural Hair

If you read my blog you know that I have been on a Hair Detox for the last few weeks. If not read this blog here and catch up on the deets.


I washed and conditioned my hair a few days prior and stretched my hair using curl formers which then turned into bunning for a few days. I decided to add some soft waves to my hair via flexi rods. Using flexi rods on dry stretched hair means less drying time and no puffy roots. I’m still trying to master the perfect flexi rod set on damp hair. But I digress………….


I rolled my hair the night before using about 20 flexi rods on my entire head. I used a rolling and twisting methods which results in more waves verses a Shirley temple curl pattern. To set this style I only used one product which was Camille Rose Naturals Almond Jai Twisting butter. This product is approved for use during the hair detox challenge.

I allowed my hair to air dry overnight and by the morning my hair was dry. This style lasted a few days. All I did was plop on my satin bonnet and go to bed 🙂

How to Moisturize Dry Natural Hair | Hair Detox

Over the last few months I have been experiencing dry hair. The condition of your hair can change over time through climate changes, hormones, diet, and a variety of other factors. These changes can also affect the way your hair responds and suddenly the things that used to work just stop working. At least that has been my current reality. These past few months I have experienced the driest hair of my life.  I could not for the life of me figure out why. I tried everything I knew how to do. Things had gotten so bad that I actually started praying to God for a solution to end my dry hair problems.


Since I am on the mailing list for I received an email notification about an article on the subject of dry hair. Of course I clicked on it with intrigue thinking maybe it would have something to help me. The article was written by Aisha Strickland titled 7 Reasons Why you need to stop using Coconut Oil and Shea Butter on your Hair which you can read here. Just the title alone is enough to cause a stir in the natural hair community. A large number of products, blogs, and YouTube videos all talk about the benefits of using castor oil, coconut oil and shea butter on natural hair.

I’ve been natural for over 10 years and my hair has never really liked plain shea butter I always found it too heavy. However shea butter was an ingredient in many shampoos and conditioners I have used over the years. Now coconut oil on the other hand was my baby my boo. I always sealed my hair with coconut oil and for a while it made my hair very soft and manageable. As of late that is not the case. I noticed my hair no longer responds to coconut oil. Suffice to say this article was an eye opener for me.


As it happens the articles author Aisha Strickland of Chocolate Curls Beauty Blog  and Curl and Color Stylist Aeleise Jana of Hair Love Art are hosting a 30 Day Hair Detox Challenge. The rules are actually pretty simple. For the next 30 days:


  • No Shea Butter
  • No Coconut Oil
  • No Castor Oil
  • No Eco Styler


Sounds simple enough but for most naturalistas this is eliminating most if not all products in your arsenal. I know that cuts out a lot of products that I have been using. According to Aeleise Jana those ingredients aren’t necessarily bad however the natural community has over abused these which is what leads to product build up and eventually dry hair.


The basic reasoning behind this is that hair care should be simple and placing butters on top of oils on top of conditioners are causing build up on the hair preventing any moisture from getting in the hair strands. Moisture equals water and if you don’t clarify the oil layer from the hair you’re moisturizing dry hair. Aelise recommends that you clarify the hair well with a clarifying shampoo and then follow that up with a moisturizing sulfate free shampoo or cleansing conditioner. You can condition or deep condition afterwards apply a leave in and style as normal.


It sounds pretty basic and honestly something that I should have been following all along. Since you cannot use any shea butter, coconut oil, or castor oil including any products that contain any of those within the first 5 ingredients; I did have to purchase products for this challenge.


They do have a suggested list of products to use or you can find your own that meet the guidelines for the detox. I will be using a few from the list and I’ll also look for other products that I can try on my hair. You can find the complete list of recommended products on ChocolateCurlsBeauty or HairLoveArt.


I will be starting with the following products:

Over the next month I plan on discovering more products that fit this challenge and will update you on the new things I am testing out. I’m excited about this challenge because this will give me the opportunity to discover new products and get my curls back to a healthy state. I’m curious to see how my hair will respond to this detox and if I notice any significant changes. I will be blogging and posting pictures during this process to track my progress. The Many Uses of Coconut Oil

Those who know me personally know that I LOVE coconut oil. The coconut has become one of my favorite food because the meat and the oil extracted from it has so many health benefits that it can be labeled a super food. If i was stranded on a deserted island I would be okay with plenty of coconut. 🙂 Seriously, I use it on my hair, skin, and to cook with. Let me share with you some of my favorite coconut oil uses and benefits.

FYI: I always use Organic Raw Unrefined Coconut Oil to get the most beneficial nutrients.



This is probably the most common way I use coconut oil as it is a great conditioner for the hair. I love adding coconut oil to my deep conditioners or use it for a hot oil treatment as it is the only oil that can penetrate into the hair shaft. That means super moisturized strong bouncy hair.



Being that coconut oil is a great overall moisturizer you can also apply it directly to your skin in place of your regular lotion. Coconut oil gets deep into the skin tissues providing excellent hydration to the skin. This is an added benefit during the cold winter months when skin typically gets dry. I also like to add a few tablespoons of coconut oil to my DIY body scrubs.



Yes you read right my friends! Coconut oil can be used as a mouth wash also known as oil pulling. Take about 1-2 tablespoons  of melted coconut oil and swish around your mouth. This helps pull the toxins from out of your mouth. Just be sure to spit it out and not to swallow after swishing! After repeated use of this method you will notice your teeth getting whiter and your breath fresher.



I stopped using butter several years ago for health reasons. I found that coconut oil makes a great substitute for butter. You can use it anywhere you would normally use butter even for baking. In fact it adds a little extra flavor to your dishes. As a cooking oil you can use it in any recipe that calls for some sort of vegetable oil. If you don’t want the coconut flavor in your food just use the refined version.
