How to achieve a Fluffy Braid on Natural Hair

Natural Hair

This is another easy go to style which doesn’t take me much effort. As a self proclaimed lazy natural, I’m always wearing styles with my natural hair that don’t require too much maintenance.

To shampoo my hair I used Mielle Organics Babassu conditioning shampoo. This was my first time using this product line. I felt that this cleaned my hair, although I didn’t have much product build up to begin with. This is a good moisturizing shampoo however if I’ve used a lot of gels, oils, or other products I don’t know how good this would be at removing layers of build up. To condition my hair I used their Babassu Oil Mint Deep Conditioner. I applied the conditioner and donned a plastic cap and proceeded to sit under the dryer for 20 minutes. My hair came out soft but not uber soft.

For this braid out I preferred starting on stretched or blow dried hair. I find that when I do this my hair has way less shrinkage, more body and movement, plus I like the fluffier look it gives me. After sectioning my hair and applying a leave in, I allowed my hair to air-dry overnight. In the morning I blow-dried my hair on low using the tension method. I wanted to stretch my hair but since it was already dry I didn’t need the blow dryer for long.

Next I parted my hair starting from the back and working my way to the front. I braided my hair in medium sized braids. In the front I made sure to braid my hair in the way I wanted it to fall once dry. To set the braids I applied a small pea sized amount of the Mielle Organics White Peony Leave In Conditioner.

I allowed my hair to dry for a few hours and when it was time for me to leave for the day I simply took down the braids and separated my hair. I like the way it turned out. It’s been super humid this summer as per usual so the humidity helped out with the fluffiness. I didn’t mind it because my hair still had some definition as opposed to being a full out fro.
